Though it took too long for Volkswagen to enter the electric vehicle market, but now it seems to catch up for its late entry. For after introducing its e-Co-Motion electric van concept and the revolutionary XL1 hybrid, the auto manufacturer has introduced its first electric production car called the “e-up!” that offers a range of up to 93 miles (150 km) on a single charge.  Introduced at Volkswagen’s Annual Press and Investors Conference, the four-seat electric car operates with nearly zero noise and zero local emissions to ensure sustainable commuting for city dwellers.

Generating power from an 81-hp electric motor and 18.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, the compact electric car produce 155 lb-ft (210 Nm) of torque to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 14 seconds and can hit the top speed of 83 mph (135 km/h). Scheduled to be debuted at Frankfurt Motor Show this year, the 2,612 lbs. (1,185 kg) car can be charged with both AC and DC sources, thanks to optional Combined Charging System. Presenting a simple design like rest of the “up!” family vehicles, the e-up! electric car  also features curved LED daytime running lamps and aerodynamically optimized front-end, together with the smiley.
